Why Gas Prices Are Higher in Europe

Taxes dominate the final price at the pump. In many European countries, excise duty and VAT together account for 50 percent or more of what drivers pay. Western and Nordic countries intentionally keep fuel taxes high to reduce fuel consumption, fund infrastructure, and support climate policy goals.

Geography and supply also matter. Countries with limited refining capacity or high import dependence face higher costs. Eastern European countries generally apply lower fuel taxes, which keeps prices closer to global oil market levels.
